MRAP is also known as the Mine Countermeasures Ambush Vehicle. A major feature of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was the creative use of simple explosive devices (IEDs, or Improvised Explosive Devices) by anti-American militants. Together, landmines and IEDs caused significant casualties to U.S. forces while also draining U.S. war resources. U.S. forces in Iraq soon realized that Humvee combat vehicles could not provide adequate protection for the personnel inside. It was an urgent need for a combat vehicle with a higher level of protection to deal with the war situation.
